Dimensioning of Reactive Power Compensation in an Autonomous Island System

In this paper, a method for sizing the reactive power compensation in non-interconnected island system is presented and applied to determine necessary inductive autonomous of Rhodes Island, Greece. The often confronted with an excess power, as result—inter alia—of underground high-voltage (HV) cable lines distributed generation penetration. Reactive typically local issue systems, usually aiming at maintaining acceptable voltage profile on specific transmission segments, e.g., long or submarine cables. however, where network lengths are relatively short, meant address overall equilibrium system. proposed follows three-step approach. First, flow analysis conducted size maximum that may be necessary, i.e., practically allows unit commitment without being constrained by considerations. Then, economic dispatch model executed over course year optimal size, using output formulate balance constraints. Finally, results optimization assessed terms dynamic security verify feasibility solution.
